I completely rehashed the entire header. I'm sure you could tell in my previous post that I wasn't 100% happy. I think we're almost there now. It certainly looks different in comparison to equivilent websites. Hopefully you will agree that it looks pretty cool. I'd love to hear your comments; and I've setup a contact page especially. Of course, if you're reading this, you must be very lucky to have stumbled upon this website. It's not in any search engine, and it's not linked anywhere! Once the game is at a stage where I actually have something to show (which, is a long way yet), I'll be submitting the link to every corner of the net! (Well, almost.) Reminders that if you live in Yorkshire, England, and would like to be involved, get in touch!
I have implemented a forum system today. It is intently very basic, and lacks any advanced features. It will allow you to post messages, which is all that is required. It is also seamlessly intergrated into the website template. Feel free to join up and discuss the game!
After drawing up 8 possible designs, and re-writing the code 3 times, the website template is finally complete. I have to say, the result is pleasing. It may not be perfect, but it is certainly on the right track. I aimed towards a fresh look - modern, clean and accessable. There are no fancy dark metalic graphics like you would expect from a Sci-Fi website. Of course, I am trying to compete with large corporate web developers with limitless budgets; and by that standard, it is never good enough. So I will continue to improve it over time.
I also spent a long period of time evaluating different Content Management Systems (CMS). Unfortunately I could not find any that suited my needs. So in the end, I decided to start the whole thing from scratch. The website you see here is completely static - nothing is dynamic or database-driven. It feels old-fasioned, but I figured that gaming sites usually develop their own systems. Therefore it will be far easier for me to intergrate the website with Utopa's database in the future.
"I decided to start an MMORPG today. It's one step out of a thousand more, but I wanted a real challenge that would test my skills to the limit. There exist hundereds of massively multiplayer projects with similar aspirations; some open source, some not, most with teams of ten or more. 99% will fail, and only a couple will succeed. So why bother? Well, you don't know until you try."
